HB 1820 directs the Dept. of Social and Health Services, in consultation with the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges and the Student Achievement Council, to seek all necessary exemptions and waivers from and amendments to federal statutes, rules, and regulations in order to authorize WA’s public and private institutions of higher education to accept supplemental nutrition assistance program benefits in the form of an electronic benefit transfer card at on –campus food retail establishments. The department is further directed to report its efforts to secure federal permission at the earliest date possible. If the department is not able to obtain the necessary waivers, etc., the act will not go into effect.
