Sponsored by Senator McAuliffe, SB 5117 seeks to provide a funding allocation for family coordinators in public schools. It asserts that the placement of a family coordinator in every school “can help create a welcoming school environment that encourages family involvement and engagement; supports different forms of parent involvement; affirms all cultures in the school by connecting families’ cultures to what students are learning; helps families understand and use advocacy to resolve problems; and creates partnerships between families and schools and the surrounding communities in an effort to ensure the academic success of students.” The minimum staffing allocation for each level of prototypical school would include one family coordinator for elementary schools, one for middle schools, and 0.8 for high schools.
